Cat - Look After Your Cat

Remember, it is your responsibility to do the best you can for your cat. Look after him or her at all times.

For example, utmost care should be taken at the time of feeding. Kittens require about twice the energy per pound of body weight as a mature cat. They should be gradually introduced to the foods meant for kittens by six to eight weeks and make sure to accustom them to a regular diet of a complete and balanced growth-type food. It is also recommended at this stage that kittens be fed three to four times a day during this period of rapid growth, and always have a source of fresh, clean water available at all times so that they quench their thirst. There are several varieties of food available, but perhaps the best are moistened dry ones or canned food that should be kept left at room temperature. They should contain adequate energy, vitamin and mineral content. If you have to change the diet make it sure to change it gradually over a 7 to 10 day period to avoid causing digestive upset.

Kittens also tend to be "occasional" eaters. They like their food but like to have a large number of small meals throughout the day. If you notice you will find that after consuming a small portion of the food, they generally leave the area only to return at intervals during the day when they prefer to eat. This is not refusal to eat but rather a typical pattern. If it is prolonged, and if food refusal is extended along with other signs of illness such as, diarrhea, repeated vomiting, straining to urinate or constipation, or unusual hiding in dark places, don't lose time and immediately consult the veterinarian medical practitioner. Your kitten could be ill.

In case of adult cats only normal diet is needed although it should be nutritious and healthy. If your cat is healthy then a commercial cat food is quite enough. Remember they should be fed as individuals - the needs of each cat is different. They should be kept in a good body condition including plenty of activity, adequate temperature and plentiful opportunity for play.

Lastly always be aware that cats are fond of stability. So if you change things around or move home, have a consideration for your cat. An environmental or social change may have a prominent effect on its behavior and your beloved cat may be uneasy. They will, however, adapt eventually - just give them time.

Cat - Category Five Hurricane Wilma

Just when you thought the record breaking Hurricane Season was just about over and out of names, Wilma reminds us we still have over 40 days left. Wilma is ready to rock the record books once again, making it a double record maker. She makes the 2005 Hurricane Season the largest on record. And as she hits "CAT Five" Hurricane Status, Wilma joins her sisters a reminder that she will not be forgotten. Will Hurricane Wilma dip under the 900 mb low pressure record of one of the best well-organized Hurricanes?

She will hit the much dreaded category five status like Mega Hurricane Katrina and Super Hurricane Rita and she could well be one of the most beautiful storms ever seen, the eye was only four miles across, can you even believe that, that is one tight, too perfect in fact. So perfect that it is horrific to look at. Super Hurricane Cat Five Hurricane Wilma started out a long standing hovering as a Tropical Depression number 24. Now Hurricane Wilma has dumped the 2-4 and left the 4, that's right a Category 4 Hurricane, now she moves into Mega-Super Hurricane Status. The winds started mild at not much more than 30-33 mph and then she became a tropical storm for two-days, then in only one day it went from a Category I Hurricane to a Category IV in less than 18-hours; In fact in only 7-hours she went from a Category one with a low pressure of 970 mb to a Category IV with winds of 150 mb and a low pressure are of 901 mb. What does this mean? It means Hurricane Wilma will become a Category Five or CAT V Hurricane.

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshs.shtml

She joins only a dozen of the top Hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic Basin History with names like Hurricanes; Katrina, Rita, Andrew and Gilbert. It already looks as if Hurricane Wilma maybe the most powerful hurricanes ever. Three of the top Hurricanes ever recorded all in the same year; The 2005 Hurricane Season will continue to break records and Wilma is making sure we never forget it. Think about this.

Cat - The Best Definition of a Typical Cat

How many times have you heard that the typical cat is a predator? More times than you can imagine. But when you are trying to come up with the definition of a typical cat surely it is better to study the overall habits of a cat and come up with the best summary. For starters, what does a cat do during a typical day? Here is my list of the things that acts do:

? They purr.
? They sleep.
? They chase moving objects.
? They eat.
? They sleep some more.

I think the most common activities are sleeping and purring. From kittens to senior cats, purring is the earliest most easily distinguishable hallmark of all cats.

All Cats Purr

Whilst purring is common to all cats, it is not always indicative of its being happy. Sometimes, cats purr when they are distressed or sick. Some scientists believe that cats use purring as a mechanism to calm itself down in much the same way humans do during meditation. When they purr they produce similar brainwaves to the human 'alpha wave' patterns, which induce a feeling of inner calm. There have been recent suggestions that having a purring act on your lap will have a calming effect on you as well. In other words, the benefits of purring can be transferred. Many nursing homes for the elderly are keeping cats as pets for their residents with beneficial effects being noted.

Cats can sleep for up to sixteen hours a day as well as taking catnaps of ten or fifteen minutes at a time during periods of activity. Many cats also love catnip plant and will munch at it and roll around in it and, to all appearances, appear to be addicted to it. Any change in behavior should be carefully observed and may require a visit to the vet if you become concerned.

Your cat might seem to be an unusually good climber. This is typical of al cats. It is here that the similarity to a predator role is seen most clearly. From a high vantage point, the cat can observe the movement and presence of possible prey. They do this from a position of safety as they have excellent all round vision and can stay out of the way of danger. I think the best way to think of a cat is not so much as a predator, but an independent animal keeping up its hunting skills so they will always be prepared for the possibility that they may be abandoned by their owners. They maintain their independence and their predator behavior is nothing more than this.

Cat - What's the Best Diet for a Pregnant Cat?

Pregnant cats have to eat for two, three, four, five, even six cats. So her regular meal is just not enough. What should you give instead?

Pregnant and lactating queens need more calories than normal. However, you won't have to force her to eat. Cats are very intelligent animals. They know when they have to eat and how much.

Don't get worried if your cat's appetite decreases in the very early stages of pregnancy. Soon her appetite will increase, and this time dramatically.

The quality of the food is essential. Of course you should always give your cat a nutritionally balanced meal, but this time it's even more important than usual. You are not feeding one cat anymore, but a few (soon-to-be) kittens as well!

It's recommended to buy food from a pet store. Most experienced breeders agree that kitten food is the best for your pregnant cat - yes, even when the kittens are not there yet. Why? Because kitten food contains more calories and protein, and that's just what your queen needs.

Gradually start mixing your cat's regular food with this high-quality kitten food you found in your pet store. Add more kitten food every week. During the week of birth your queen should eat only kitten food.

Some breeders also serve raw meat and say that's good for a pregnant cat as well. However, there is some controversy about this.

About 24 to 48 hours before delivery a pregnant queen will refuse food. Her appetite should return within one day after she gave birth.

Keep her on a kitten food diet until the kittens are weaned.
